May Activities
- On Saturday, May 5, a Backpack Orientation will be held at the Scout
House to demonstrate the equipment that is available and what is necessary for
successful backpacking. The session will be targeted at the new scouts and
parents, or others who are beginning to acquire camping/hiking gear.
- The
first backpack weekend is May 18 to 20. We are planning three hikes: a medium
difficulty hike to Sespe Creek, a medium difficulty and easy hike to Manzana
Narrows and Fish Creek respectively. Sign up sheets are available at the scout
meetings. As of May 1, the Sespe Creek trip signups were low.
- An advancement
day is scheduled for Saturday, May 12 at 9 AM at the scout house. These days are
opportunities for scouts to work on and get signed off on advancement
requirements.
- An Eagle project is scheduled for May 25-26 involving trail
repair near Chantry Flats. Sign-up sheets will be available on the sign up
board.
- An Eagle Project is being done at Redondo High School to provide
permanent artwork in the School Library. This project is being done independent
of Troop resources.
- A Patrol Coordinator Training Session is being planned
for the night of May 22, concurrent with the Scout Meeting.
June
Activities - There are two hike weekends, June 8-10 and June 22-24.
We will have at least two hikes, one easy and one difficult, each weekend. A
second difficult hike will probably be added to accommodate the number of scouts
and adults requiring training hikes to meet Long Term Hike prerequisites
provided enough adults participate in order to have three adults on each hike.
Long Term participants need to go on three training hikes as a prerequisite for
Long Term. Note that there is only one hike weekend planned in July before long
term.
- Summer Camp Information Night for Chawanakee and Emerald Bay are
scheduled for Wednesday, June 6 at 6:30 PM. Location for each of the meetings
will be announced. Final payment is due at the Meeting.
- An advancement day
is scheduled for Saturday, June 16 at 9 AM at the scout house. These days are
opportunities for scouts to work on and get signed off on advancement
requirements.
- We are trying to plan an Eagle Court of Honor for the latter
half of the month.
Eagle Candidates - The committee
reviewed an Eagle Scout Candidate and approved his advancement to his Eagle
Board of Review.
- The committee reviewed two Eagle Service Projects and
approved each project with certain follow-up conditions.
Discussions
of Past Events - Braving the weather, the Fishing Hike happened on
April 7. Scheduled for three days and two nights, the hike was aborted because
we were not prepared for the snow that began to fall after we arrived at our
campsite on the Kern River. Twelve scouts and three adults participated in this
one-day event. All were disappointed that we did not get a chance to enjoy our
campsite at Headquarters camp on the North Fork of the Kern River.
- The
Spring Camporee was held on April 20-22 at The Featherly Regional Park in
Anaheim Hills. Braving one night of rain, our scouts competed as a patrol in
Skills Competition against very strong competition.
- The Eagle project on
April 28 at the Madronna Marsh was successful with a very large turnout.
Summer Camp 2001 - Emerald Bay is fully reserved and there are
spots open at Chawanakee. We have adults that have volunteered to attend the
camps. It was noted that summer camp participants need to have attended at least
two Troop overnight activities after joining the Troop.
Long Term
2001 - Sign-ups by scouts for the three long-term hikes have been
good. It was noted that we would need additional adults on each of the hikes.
The signup sheets are available at the scout meetings.
- A subcommittee has
been formed to review the requirements, qualifications and makeup of the Long
Term Groups. This revives the review program that the Troop used in the past
with a great deal of success.
Other Discussion Items - The
Troop is progressing on finding additional patrol coordinators for new and
existing patrols. We will hold a Patrol Coordinator training session on May 22.
- The Troop will be sending at least four scouts to junior leader training
July 15 to 21 at the Forest Lawn District Camp. The Scoutmasters will select the
candidates.
- The application for a booth at the HomeTown Fair has been sent
in. We have requested a Coke, Hot Dog or Hamburger Booth.
- We will inquire
with Fry's about their parking lot event selling hot dogs and sodas that
normally occurs in May.
- An e-mail list of the scout leaders is being
developed.
- Suggestions/ideas for improving the Troop are always welcomed and
should be directed to the Committee Chairman or Asst. Committee Chairman.
The next Troop Committee Meeting will be Thursday, June 7th, 2001, at the
School Hall, American Martyrs School at 7:30 PM. [FYI - Please mark your
calendars: The July committee meeting will be held on the second Thursday of
July (7/12) instead of the first Thursday.] Back to Troop Committee page Contents of this page provided by Leigh Noda.
