January 30, 2010 "Pay It Forward" Community
Service Day/Weekend This unique and very special program brings all
scouts together "under one roof" to provide community service to worthwhile
organizations helping people in need. Pay It Forward is on the move and
will be held in February 2010 by all the Districts of the Los Angeles Area
Council. Huge Community Service Projects will be taking place and all troops
are being asked to participate with their Districts in this joint effort to do
their Good Turn and provide community service to worthwhile organizations and
people in need all over the Los Angeles area. What a way to celebrate the 100th
Anniversary of Scouting! Pacifica District's Pay it Forward Project is a
clothing drive with Soldier's Angels. Please contact Sally Bickel for details.
Thanks. January 25, 2010 Historical Merit
Badge Program In honor of the BSA's 100th Anniversary, today's
generation of Scouts will get the unique opportunity to experience some of the
activities their predecessors enjoyed. That's possible thanks to the BSA's new
Historical Merit Badge Program, a set of four discontinued merit badges that
today's Scouts can earn. Boys can earn any or all of these merit
badges: - Signaling - First offered in 1910 (as Signaller merit
badge) and discontinued in 1992.
- Tracking - First offered in 1911 (as
Stalker merit badge) and discontinued in 1952.
- Pathfinding - First
offered in 1911 and discontinued in 1952.
- Carpentry - First offered in
1911 and discontinued in 1952.
Scouts can start working on them
NOW. See http://usscouts.org/meritbadges.asp
for links to the badge requirements. The merit badges will count for
towards a boy's rank advancement. Work on the badges is not to commence prior to
January 1, 2010 and is to be finished no later than December 31, 2010. December 14, 2009 Philmont in 2011 Mark
your calendars - we got lucky and are going to Philmont Scout Ranch in the
summer of 2011. The exact dates are August 11th to 18th. (Add travel days on
both ends.) This will be a 7 day short trek. Philmont is very popular and is
"the thing" for all Scouts to do at least once. It is the Boy Scouts of
America's oldest national high-adventure base. Its 34 staffed camps and 55 trail
camps provide an unforgettable adventure in the high country along hundreds of
miles of rugged, rocky trails. Up to 24 people may attend. Scouts must
be at least 14 by January 1, 2011, or have completed the 8th grade and be at
least 13 years of age prior to the trek. The cost will be about $450 per person
plus the cost of transportation. For more information on Philmont and to
learn about all they have to offer, talk to someone that has been there or visit
http://www.scouting.org/philmont/.
Mailing List We are encouraging
all parents and scouts to sign-up for our broadcast system at announce@troop849.org.
We need to use this system to communicate more thoroughly and completely because
of the size of the Troop. If you are not on the list, please sign up by going to
www.troop849.org/homeMailingList.html.
