your calendars - we are going to Philmont Scout Ranch in the summer of 2009. The
exact dates are August 12th to 21st. (Add travel days on both ends.) This will
be a 9 day short trek. Philmont is very popular and is "the thing" for all
Scouts to do at least once. It is the Boy Scouts of America's oldest national
high-adventure base. Its 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps provide an
unforgettable adventure in the high country along hundreds of miles of rugged,
rocky trails. Up to 36 people may attend. Scouts must be at least 14 by
January 1, 2009, or have completed the 8th grade and be at least 13 years of age
prior to the trek. The cost will be about $470 per person plus the cost of
transportation. For more information on Philmont and to learn about all
they have to offer, visit http://www.scouting.org/philmont/.
Updated Web Site! You'll find a
slightly different look, a little better organization, and lots of new
content. For the new Scout - A document to help you get started
backpacking. It is called "Your First
Hike". Check this out if you are about to go on your first backpacking
hike with the Troop. You can also download
this document and print it out. For the experienced Scout - A
document full of tips and tricks to make hiking more fun. It is called "Trail Tips". If you have a tip you'd
like to share, we'd like to add it. Please contact Mr. Thorpe. You can also download this document and print it out.
For the hike leader - Two documents that tell you "everything you
wanted to know" about leading a hike. They are the "Weekend Hikemaster Handbook" and
the "Longterm Hikemaster
Handbook". Both can be downloaded and printed out. (See the bottom of
each page.) We also have a new page that gives all kinds of contact information for making weekend
hike reservations (both URLs and phone numbers). You can also get local water reports. After many
years of adding to this site it was time for a makeover. So now there is more
consistency between pages along with better browser compatibility. If you should
find anything that doesn't look right, please let us
know. Thanks. Top of page
Mailing List We are encouraging
all parents and scouts to sign-up for our broadcast system at announce@troop849.org.
We need to use this system to communicate more thoroughly and completely because
of the size of the Troop. If you are not on the list, please sign up by going to
www.troop849.org/homeMailingList.html.
